Finding Love Later in Life

It’s never too late for love, and even if you find yourself in some of the later stages of life, you never know when love is going to find you. Here are three ways finding love later in life is just a little bit different.

You stop worrying about aging. Many of us at one point or another have worried about aging, how we’ll age or how our partners will age. When you find love later in life, however, those concerns definitely aren’t top of mind. Instead, you start focusing on aging together, and the companionship you’ll bring each other as it happens.

Your priorities shift. It’s all too easy to focus on the superficial when you’re young, but later on in life you stop worrying about how you and your partner look together, focusing instead on how you fit into each other’s lives. Odds are you’ve also long since stopped caring about what your parents might think of your potential partner…

You learn to love yourself first. Loving yourself is an important step towards leading a good life and loving someone else, but it’s a lesson that takes time to learn, and there’s a chance you may not have learned it when you’re in love for the first time. Learning to love yourself takes time and patience, but once it happens, it makes every other relationship in your life just that much better!

Dealing With Romantic Rejection

It could be on the first date or when asking for a date, it could be after years together or before the relationship really gets going, but no matter when it happens, sometimes it just happens. Rejection is never fun, but sometimes it’s reality, and when it is, here are three things to keep in mind when dealing with it.

There are plenty of fish in the sea. It may sound cliché, but it’s true. Let’s look at the numbers: There are 7.5 billion people on the planet. That’s Billion, with a B. Sure, they don’t all live in your neighborhood, but odds are there’s more than one perspective partner nearby and thanks to online dating it’s never been easier to connect with just about anyone.

It’s not you, it’s them. Take a moment to think that you may not have been the problem. Everyone has issues to deal with, and sometimes a rejection has little or nothing to do with you. A bit of empathy goes a long way in taking the sting out of rejection.

Or… Maybe it is you. You’re probably not perfect, but while you certainly don’t have to fit everyone’s standards it doesn’t hurt to take stock on occasion. Ask a trusted friend what they think, you may not have to change anything about yourself but it helps to know of any quarks that could be deal-breakers for others.

Improving Your Relationships with Love Languages

It’s been stated time and time again: Communication is the key to making romances work. But clear and effective communication is not always easy to achieve, especially when it comes to expressing yourself to your partner and your partner expressing themselves to you. Enter: “Love Languages.”

Longtime relationship counselor Gary Chapman introduces us to the concept of Love Languages in his book, Five Love Languages. Chapman states: “My conclusion after thirty years of marriage counseling is that there are basically five emotional love languages—five ways that people speak and understand emotional love. In the field of linguistics a language may have numerous dialects or variations. Similarly, within the five basic emotional love languages, there are many dialects....The important thing is to speak the love language of your spouse.”

It may seem like a complicated concept, but it becomes quite simple by the end of the book. Essentially, the five love languages can be broken down as follows:

  • Words of Affirmation: Using spoken affection, praise, or appreciation to express that affection.
  • Acts of Service: In this case love is expressed through actions rather than words.
  • Receiving Gifts: Gifting is symbolic of love and affection.
  • Quality Time: In which affection is expressed through dedicated, undivided, and undistracted attention.
  • Physical Touch: Ranging anywhere from sex to holding hands as a means of expressing affection through physical touch.

Chapman believe that speaking the same love language as your spouse is the key to any successful relationship, and who are we to argue.
